Drop Zones One of the features that attracted some publicity in this year’s Open was Drop Zones, which are used where there are practical problems in players using normal relief options. The grandstands were a pretty long way off the playing surfaces, and if they weren’t there, the players were going to be in some pretty nasty stuff. The R&A tried to replicate as much as they could the lie the player may have encountered if the grandstand wasn’t there. Some of the drop zones were in some pretty nasty situations and nasty places. Therefore, you never saw somebody, who had hit it into a grandstand that’s surrounded by three-feet high grass, dropping it in a closely mown area as a drop zone! This approach preserved both the spirit and integrity of the game.
