Competition news

Ladies' Stableford and Norton Rose Bowl

Congratulations to Sally Hill who won the Stableford and Norton Rose Bowl last Thursday with 33 points. Sam Avens took second place on countback with 33 points. Sandra O’Sullivan took third place with 32 points.

Men's Stableford and Lumby Cup

On Saturday, our Yelverton Men played in the Stableford and Lumby Cup.

In Division One, Neil Blanchard took first place with 40 points. In second place Simon Callender with 38 points and in third place was Clive O’Sullivan with 38 points.

In Division Two, Paul Cunningham was first with 40 points. In second place was Dave Hyslop with 35 points with Paul Merrin taking third place with 34 points.

In Division Three, Martin Cooper was first with 40 points. Divarker Rai took second place with 26 points and in third place was Barry Garland with 34 points.

Finally, in Division Four, Gary Sansom took the top spot with 38 points. Paul Taylor took second place on countback with 38 points and in third place was Daniel White with 36 points.

Midweek Stableford

On Tuesday, we had our Midweek Stableford. Robert Ellis scooped first place with a whopping 42 points. Mick Hicks was second with 39 points and in third place was George Graham with 38 points.

Tavistock Delaney Texas Scramble

Massive congratulations to our girls Gilly Jarvis, Ann Pritchard and Gina Mason who won the Tavistock Delaney Texas Scramble scoring a fantastic 63.2. Gina also scooped Nearest The Pin on the fourth. Well done girls, great to see a Yelverton Team doing so well away from home.

Will you be attending?

On Tuesday, 17 September, Titleist will be coming to Yelverton for a demo day with their new range of irons that will be released at the end of this month. Spaces are filling up fast, so don’t miss out!

I have also asked them to bring their demo Scotty Cameron’s with them, so if you are contemplating a new Scotty then this will be the day to give them a try!

August spectacular

New snack option in the shop...

We are trying to add to our on-course snacks options in the within the shop. One of our die-hard members Mike Halford keeps telling me he loves a stinger on the course, so I thought I would oblige and provide him with one that he could successfully execute!

Junior news

Junior camp

Yesterday, Matt held the Yelverton Junior camp. A fantastic day where our Juniors were coached in the morning then made their way onto the main course in the afternoon. Matt kindly offered this day FREE of charge as he wanted to give something back to the Junior Section which he was once a member of.

Junior Coaching starts back this Saturday!

If you are thinking of getting your child into golf, then now is the time with a new block of seven sessions beginning this weekend.

Adam's corner

Last week our Shobrook team battled the bad traffic and bad weather to venture up to Broadstone. Right from the off, we were playing in the pouring rain until we got called in on the 12th hole with flooded greens!
Over the coming weeks, I’m making more of an effort to play a bit more! I will be playing Clevedon Pro-Am tomorrow then Okehampton, Oake Manor and St Mellion over the coming weeks.

Our secretary, Colin let me loose on his swing this week! Colin hasn’t had much coaching over the years and has relied a lot on talent and ability to play some good golf. We were working on getting his takeaway in a more neutral position, so he doesn’t have to rely on his hands so much (timing) therefore his swing being dominated by his big muscles. This is crucial for better players who don’t get the time to spend hours on the practice area fine-tuning and creates more low maintenance, repeatable action.

Lauren’s corner

I had a busy weekend helping my mum and dad with the house, still, lots of things to organise, let’s hope we can get them all sorted and settled by Christmas(I was hoping mum would do lunch). I did manage to squeeze in a game of golf at East Devon. I played to my handicap for the first time in quite a few rounds which I was really pleased about. I will be heading out to play in the Yelverton Ladies Guest Day today. My good friend Rosemary Pratt is coming to play with me, we have the pleasure of partnering Annette Sweeney and her guest. I’m sure we will have some fun if nothing else!

Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to get a team for Broadstone in the end, but on the other hand, the weather wasn’t great so I sort of dodged a bullet there! Next, I will be playing at Okehampton in their Pro-Am on Tuesday, 3 September.

Also this week I did a summer camp for the juniors! There was a bit of coaching in the morning on the short game, finished off with a couple of challenges. After lunch in the afternoon, we managed to get out and play a few holes! It’s good to be able to see the juniors growing again.

Relief for your ball in temporary water in a bunker

With the recent heavy rains, the Greens team have been busy identifying and marking those flooded bunkers, either fully or partially as Ground Under Repair.

If fully marked GUR, you are entitled to take free relief outside the bunker, either back-on-line or in a marked Drop Zone. If partially marked GUR, you are entitled to take free relief inside the bunker, the nearest point of relief not nearer the hole.

However, if your ball is in a bunker not marked GUR and there is interference by temporary water, you may take either:

Free relief not nearer the hole under Rule 16.1c(1), except that the nearest point of complete relief and the relief area must be in the bunker. If there is no nearest point of complete relief in the bunker, you may still take this relief, by using the point of maximum available relief, not nearer the hole, in the bunker as the reference point.

Or Penalty Relief under Rule 16.1c(2), by taking back-on-line-relief outside the Bunker for one penalty stroke.

Back to basics

There are any number of online tutorials giving you the 'perfect advice' as to how to cure a specific problem you may have with your game. However, the key to solving most issues in sport (golf included) is to go right back to where it all began - the fundamentals.

Check your fundamentals

The way you set-up to the ball writes the script for the swing. This may be one of the more basic elements to the game but yet it is also one of the most overlooked – and that can be dangerous for your scorecard.

Jack Nicklaus once said:

"If you set up correctly, there's a good chance you'll hit a reasonable shot, even if you make a mediocre swing. If you set up to the ball poorly, you'll hit a lousy shot even if you make the greatest swing in the world”

The most beautiful shot in golf

If we were to ask you this question what would you say? We think some of you would say the ‘Tiger stinger’ but a good proportion would say the pitch shot that takes a couple of bounces before stopping to a halt. It looks sensational but how on earth do you play it?

The key to making this shot is simple – your wedges. Yes, technique is key and is certainly something we can talk you through during a lesson but without the correct equipment you stand no chance.
