Ladies' Guest Day

Last Thursday, we held our Yelverton Ladies Guest Day.

It was great to see so many new faces and fabulous to see Gina Mason and her partner, Caroline Snail from Borringdon win!

Bank Holiday Pro Shop Stableford

We held our first Bank Holiday Pro Shop Stableford last weekend.

The weather was fantastic and it was a great opportunity to have a bit of fun over the holidays.

Paul Tucker took first place with a fantastic score of 44 points. Mike Pearce was second with 40 points and in third place was Gina Mason with 39 points.

Midweek Stableford

On Tuesday, Kevin Anderton scooped top spot in our Midweek Stableford with 40 points. In second place was Gilly Jarvis with 40 points and in third place on countback was Andrew Stewart with 40 points.

Want to follow in Gina's footsteps?

You may have noticed Gina Mason’s name being mentioned a lot recently. She has been on winning form finishing first in two events and coming third in another this week alone.

We can put it down to the top-notch coaching she receives here from myself. Gina has also recently been fitted for a G400 Max Driver here at Yelverton Golf Club, so the combination of the coaching and a club that is specifically fitted to Gina’s swing equals pretty impressive results!

Junior news

Junior coaching

It was another great turn out for last Saturday’s junior coaching. It was great to see all our Juniors back after a short break. Junior coaching continues this Saturday 10am-11am or 11am-12pm and Golf Access on Sunday starting at 3pm.

Golf Psychologist visits Yelverton's juniors...

Today we had Golf Psychologist, Sophie Gibbs-Nicholls, visit Yelverton Golf Club to talk to our juniors.

It was a great way for our juniors to understand how the game makes us feel and to get to grips with the more mental side of the game!

Adam’s corner

Last week, I made my way to Clevedon Golf Club in Bristol to play in their Pro-Am. I played with a team from Clevedon who were really nice chaps but unfortunately, my game wasn’t really on point and I came in with a pretty average score. Looking forward to next week when I play in the Okehampton Pro-Am and the Oak Manor Pro-Am. Another busy golfing week ahead!

Lauren’s corner

I enjoyed a lovely round of golf with my guest from East Devon, Rosemary Pratt last Thursday. We had the pleasure of playing with Annette Sweeney and her partner. Rosemary didn’t play her best but she thoroughly enjoyed the course. Commenting on the wonderful conditions of the greens and the fabulous atmosphere in the clubhouse for the presentation. Can’t wait to play next Thursday and Friday in The Salz Trophy with Rosamund Kikidas when I defend my title, wish me luck!

Matt's corner

Looking forward to playing at Okehampton in their Pro-Am next week. It’s been a busy few weeks for me between working in the shop, coaching and squeezing in a few practice sessions. I can’t wait to get in a few rounds of golf and see if all the practising pays off.

Rules news

Pace of Play

In recent weeks, much has been said and written about the plague of slow play in golf, with the European Tour announcing a plan to address slow play. We’ll see how that goes.

Rule 5.6b states that a round of golf is meant to be played at a prompt pace.

At Yelverton, we have a Pace of Play policy, which includes the practice of Ready Golf for both social golf and Stroke Play competitions (not Match Play). At its core is the principle that each player hits their shot or takes their putt as soon as they are ready and it is safe to do so.

A few years ago, a maximum target of 3 hours 40 minutes was introduced for Men's competitive three-ball playoff White tees, and this has resulted in significantly reduced competition round times. Please keep it going.

Flop shot required

Type ‘flop shot’ into Google and Phil Mickelson’s name will be at the top of the search. The five-time Major champion is the go-to guy when it comes to shots around the green, especially the flop shot. So, if you want to follow suit and impress your golfing partners, here’s our guide to this magical shot.

Technique

The first thing you must do is accelerate through the ball and stay aggressive. It's when we get a little scared or take our eye off the ball that things start to go wrong, all of which we can explain during a short game lesson.

Wedge

Your wedge plays a vital role with worn grooves and incorrect bounce leaving you at risk of a bladed shot through the green. Nightmare!

Cleveland’s brand-new CBX 2 wedges are arguably the best around to execute this shot properly, as the C-shape grind provides the perfect option to get the ball popping high up in the air and stopping quickly.

Spotlight | Titleist TS hybrids

TS2 or TS3?

You will probably recognise these names from the new drivers that Titleist released last year. Well, they've carried on their pursuit of speed and have conjured up these two beauties as a result.

Both offer extreme yet controllable distances, along with more forgiveness when compared to previous Titleist hybrids.

The TS2 has a larger head and is arguably easier to hit, whilst the TS3 comes with the SureFit CG for ball flight control.
