No free relief for a Ball in Penalty Area A recurring question relates to Bridges in Penalty Areas. At Yelverton, the edge of a Penalty Area is defined by the line between the outside points of Red or Yellow Stakes and the stakes are inside the Penalty Area. Under Rule 17.3 - When a player’s ball is in a Penalty Area, there is no relief for interference by an abnormal course condition, in this case, a Bridge. The player’s options are:
- play the ball as it lies, or
- take one-stroke penalty relief under Rule 17.
