Competition news

The latest runners and riders...

Our Ladies played in their Stableford and Grandmothers Cup last week. Sally Hills scooped 1st place with 37 points while in 2nd place it was Gina Mason with 35 point and in 3rd place it was Liz Westacott with 34 points.

Unfortunately Tuesday’s Midweek Stableford was a non-qualifier due to the adverse weather conditions we had.

Yesterday our Vets played in their monthly Stableford with Mike Ayres taking top spot with 38 points while Andy Young with 36 points was in 2nd place and in 3rd place (ocb) was Ray Curran with 36 points.

Tomorrow Yelverton Golf Club has the honour of hosting 4 very important finals with the tees booked from 8am through to 15.00.

The Doris Willes-Little Final - Okehampton v Ilfracombe.

Junior news

Heading in the right direction...

Junior Coaching has been going really well over the last few weeks with record numbers attending.

I am pleased to say that we are now getting to as point that we will be looking to add a monthly junior competition into the mix. We also run Junior practice sessions on Monday evenings so all of this together seems to be taking us in the right direction.

I’m hoping this time next year we will have a Junior team that we can have our there representing Yelverton Golf Club.

Season's coming to an end...

I had a great round at Woodbury Park last week playing in The Malcolm Invitational.

I am pleased to say our team won and I came 4th in the Individual Pros tournament. I was pleased with the way I played finishing -2.

The tournaments are quietening down now and I look forward to playing in The PGA Alliance which starts over the next couple of weeks and keeps me playing through winter.

A fabulous day out....

I had a fabulous time last Wednesday when I played at Oake Manor with our Lady Captain, Sue Gullick, and Vice Lady Captain, Jane Hulbert.

We all took our turn at playing some good golf and came in with a respectable score, but unfortunately it was not enough to be in the prizes.

Lovely day out had by all, including Yelverton Captain, Bryan Gullick, and Gary Hulbert who were fantastic caddies for the day.

Positive direction...

I've had a busy week in the shop and coaching. I’m pleased to say that I’m building up my portfolio of students and glad to see they are all doing well.

I head to Dainton Park today to play in a Devon Professional’s Tournament and I'm really looking forward to this as this is my first year being able to compete in this.

Rules of Golf Level 1 Workshop

Do you want to advance your knowledge of the rules?

Devon Golf are running a Level 1 Rules Workshop at Fingle Glen on Sunday 20th October, which will be conducted by a top R&A referee.

This Workshop is FREE to all volunteers who have an interest in the Rules of Golf. There are 3 Levels in the R&A Rules education Program, with Level 1 the introductory category.

Glide into action

Winter is coming

Have you ever noticed how much harder you need to hit your putts in the winter compared to summer? As surfaces begin to slow due to longer grass and wetter greens, the need for a little extra effort on your putting stroke becomes clear.

Should you change your putter?

As putts need to be hit harder to get the ball going the same distance as they do in the summer months, using a heavier putter certainly won’t do you any harm.

The thought here is that a heavier putter will do more of the work for you, allowing for a smooth and more controlled putting stroke.

Whilst still being relatively lightweight compared to some putters in the range (Valor is 30g heavier), PING's Sigma 2 Wolverine putter is certainly an option we'd recommend you trying.
